I believe that mouldings can add the finishing touch to your designs, taking them to the next level.

They are perfect for setting the stage for you client’s rooms.

Without mouldings most interior designs can feel flat.

In this blog article I will illustrate how different mouldings can produce different looks even before the furnishings and accessories are layered in.

I also wanted to let you know I will be sharing a FREE Workshop called Integrating Mouldings and Millwork Into Your Kitchen Design Business next month.

To see how mouldings can change the look of a room I have started with a line drawing of a space void of trim except some basic flat stock around the double doors.

Let’s look at some options for changing the look of this space just with trim.

Core Trim

Core mouldings include baseboard, casing and crown moulding and should be the first pieces of trim the designer choses for the room.

These trim pieces should work with the interior door design specified for the project.

It is important to coordinate the look of each of these pieces for a cohesive look.

There are multiple options available on the market so experiment with different collections to get the perfect look for your space.

Wainscot & Layering Trim

Wainscot is referred to as wooden paneling that lines the lower part of the walls of a room.

It is a look that can easily be achieved using layering trim.

Layering trim acts as a complement to the core trim adding additional style to the room.

The layering trim typically used to produce wainscot is chair rail, panel moulding along with core trim baseboard.

An architrave is another piece of layering trim and when added to the top of a casing gives the opening more presence.

Wall Paneling

Using trim to add detail to the whole wall is another way to add detail to a space.

Depending on the width of the panel moulding specified you can get a more “feminine” feel with narrow product, or a “masculine” feel with wide mouldings.

Experimenting with different layouts for the full wall paneling can produce different looks in the room.

Don’t forget to think about how the interior doors you choose will affect the overall look.

As these examples illustrate, there are multiple types of glass you could insert into different door designs.

Rosettes

Rosettes are a type of ornamental trim that can be added to core and layering trim for a unique look.

These decorative pieces can be inserted into wainscot or full wall paneling.

There are multiple designs for rosettes available on the market. Check out artisans, lumber yards and big box retailers for options.

Rosettes could become the signature look in your designs!

Paint It

A great way to expand your repertoire with mouldings is to introduce paint.

Painting out the walls, the doors, and the trim all in one color will produce a look very different from painting the trim in a contrast from the wall color.

Choosing a matt finish or a high gloss will also produce a different affect.

The 10 examples above are just the tip of the iceberg of what you could do with just this space.

Once you add in different room configurations and your imagination, trim can really set the stage for your next project.

Let me know your thoughts on trim. Do you think it is important? Is it something you specify in all your projects?
