In a resent blog, I predicted that the Classic English Kitchen will be the look that takes over for the Modern Farmhouse look for kitchen design.

Both designers and homeowners are looking for something new, and the Classic English Kitchen look fits this bill.

It has similar elements to Modern Farmhouse but more details.

In this VESTA Blog we will look at the details that make up this kitchen decor style to help you recreate it for your clients.

An English Classic kitchen is a simple yet timeless look.

It has more details than the modern farmhouse but less than ornate traditional kitchens.

The following are elements that make up the English Classic Kitchen.

1. Cabinetry

Cabinetry has understated profiles with no overly ornate or trendy details.

While shaker-styled cabinet doors are a staple in English Classic design, other recessed panel doors with simple sticking details are appropriate in this style. (Sticking is the inside profile of a 5-piece wood cabinet door)

The center panel is often plain, but can also include bead board or narrow shiplap panels.

Simple cut out details within the panel can be a nice touch, bringing an authentic look to the kitchen design.

Slab drawer fronts are also a common option especially when combined with framed inset construction.

Both framed and frameless construction can be used to get an English Classic look.

2. Materials

High quality materials are a must for a Classic English kitchen.

Cabinet boxes produced from wood should be the first choice for an authentic look.

Wood dovetail drawer boxes are perfect for this look.

Natural stone countertops like marble or granite are the go-to materials in a Classic English kitchen.

They enhance the aesthetic appeal of the kitchen and also ensures longevity and durability.

The right manmade quartz counter that includes natural veining can work as well.

Metals in classic brass or nickel finishes for cabinet hardware and light fixtures is appropriate.

“Live” finishes like unlacquered brass that will patina with time also works well.

Other metal finishes to experiment with include stainless steel, brushed gold or matte black. Avoid anything highly polished.

3. Color Palette

Kitchen color scheme for English Classic Kitchen

The color palette for a Classic English kitchen varies from neutral to warm light tones to deep muted hues.

This replaces the all white pallet of Modern Farmhouse.

Think soft grays and creams with pale yellows and soft greens.

For the deep muted hues look to jewel tones with warm undertones.

The key is to choose colors that exude a sense of calm and sophistication.

These color tones are classics that won’t go out of style.

4. Sinks and Faucets

Farmhouse or apron-front sinks are a staple in Classic English kitchens.

These deep, large sinks add a touch of rustic charm and practicality, often made from durable materials like fireclay or porcelain.

The most authentic apron-front sinks are carved from marble and often have carved front details.

Bridge styled traditional faucets compliment apron front sinks but if another configuration is specified, make it one with traditional details.

5. Appliances

To maintain a cohesive and integrated look, paneled refrigerators and dishwashers are a first choice for this look.

The range is the focal point appliance in English Classic kitchens.

A pro-styled range in a stand out color is perfect for this look.

The English brand AGA is also a range to consider.

To establish the range as the focal point many designers will surround it with some form of a cooking hearth.

Typically, sleek integrated modern wall ovens and cooktops would not be chosen for this look.

5. Details

The English Classic Look is all about the subtle details.

Open shelving supported with simple corbels provides an opportunity to display curated collections of your client’s dishes, glassware and decorative items.

It also adds a sense of openness to the kitchen.

Traditional plate racks for storing dishware are hallmarks of the look adding both function and aesthetic appeal.

Vertical bead board panels are a great accent pieces to incorporate into backsplashes or in the back of display cabinets.

Details such as exposed wooden beams, rustic flooring or a reclaimed wood feature wall are right at home in this look.

When it comes to tile, handmade irregular tiles in mottled colors are the perfect choice.

Integrating antique furniture pieces throughout the design is an appropriate design approach in an English Classic kitchen design.

6. Bring Nature Indoors

This a look that often connects with nature.

When styling an English Classic kitchen, bring the outdoors inside by incorporating potted plants, fresh flowers, or herbs on windowsills.

Incorporating large windows or French doors into the design will maximize natural light and can provide a picturesque view of the surroundings.

This connection to nature will also add a comforting and inviting element to the overall kitchen design.

Achieving the English Classic kitchen look is about embracing simplicity, quality, and timeless design principles.

By carefully curating your materials, colors, and details, you can create kitchen designs that exude a timeless elegance and charm.

Remember though, it’s not just about replicating a specific style but about infusing your client’s personality into the design to create a space that feels truly authentic and inviting.
